Yes, before you can get some good armorers and some legendary armor-sets, you need make it with spiced food/tea. Tea in my opinion is better than firewater making your thirsty afterward. And like you mentioned, you can get shield in the loot-chests, there 2 of them, one protecting again heat, the other against cold.
